Private View for Future Folklore: The Art and Craft of Storytelling

We were delighted to host the Private View for Visual Arts Scotland on Saturday afternoon and what a turn out it was!

This exhibition FUTURE FOLKLORE: THE ART AND CRAFT OF STORYTELLING has over 300 pieces of contemporary art on display and, as a result, we also had a very busy Private View! The exhibition was opened by Chair of the Maclaurin Trust, John Walker, along with Amanda Airey, Trustee of Visual Arts Scotland.

Visual Arts Scotland supports over 1400 artists and makers in and around Scotland and we are very fortunate that VAS brings this major show across to Ayrshire. Please take advantage of it being right here on your doorstep!

As always, entry is free to the gallery and all artworks for sale. Keep an eye out for some of our Ayrshire artists taking part as well.

We are looking forward to presenting this exciting show on behalf of Visual Arts Scotland later in the month. It is an open call exhibition of work (applications now closed) and here’s a little more about it and a few images to give you a taste of what’s to come!

“Folklore is never fixed. It evolves with each retelling, carried across generations through craft, song, ritual, and imagination. Ayrshire’s landscape; from its rugged coastline and selkie myths to the haunted ruins celebrated by Robert Burns, has long inspired stories that bridge the human and the otherworldly.

This exhibition brings together artists and makers who use craft as a vessel for storytelling. Weaving together the material and the mythic, they reimagine traditions and invent new narratives for the future.

From selkie legends that speak to belonging and transformation, to contemporary myths of migration, technology, and climate change, the works on display trace how stories are made tangible in clay, textile, wood, paper, sound, and performance.

Future Folklore: The Art and Craft of Storytelling celebrates the enduring power of craft to preserve, reinvent, and create tales that shape our collective identity; stories that root us in place while imagining what comes next.”

Ayr Sketch Club – Celebrating 125 Years

Always a popular event here at The Maclaurin, is the Annual Ayr Sketch Club exhibition and they had a busy Private Viewing last Saturday.

In addition, this year they celebrate having been in continuous operation for 125 years!

The exhibition covers 3 galleries, showcasing works from 47 of their exhibiting members.

Whilst the show is running, the Club’s volunteers will be on duty to chat about their work.

Look out for their special edition brochure, giving an interesting insight into the history of the Club, as well as inviting new members.

This exhibition continues until 8 March.

Private View - Peter Foyle Solo Exhibition

Here are a few photos from the recent opening of the Peter Foyle solo exhibition.

Peter is well known in the art world here in Ayrshire as well as much further afield, having hailed from Dorset and whose artwork sells internationally.

The entire exhibition can be viewed on our website. It’s a beautiful collection of his latest works, heavily influenced by a Spring trip to the north of Scotland on the NC500. Do call in and see it if you can. The exhibition runs until 11 January 2026.

Winter Season 2025

Our winter season is off to a racing start with the launch of the 31st Annual Save the Children exhibition over the weekend.

We had very busy galleries and plenty of sales and interest in the huge array of hanging work on display. In addition, there is a wall of miniatures artworks for sale, a raffle prize of a dazzling abstract painting from local artist Sandra Ratcliffe, a children's competition and a silent auction for a chance to bid on a commissioned animal portrait by Lynne Johnstone.

The show runs until 2 November and this year the Save the Children Committee have organised an exciting additional treat!

We look forward to welcoming Ozzy the barn owl to the courtyard on SUNDAY 12 OCTOBER from noon til 3pm. This is a free family event and also an opportunity for artists to sketch from life!

Ozzy will be there with some of his feathered friends and his handler, Gillian Borland of Hoots Owls and Wedding Wings. Look out for the painting of Ozzy in the exhibition!

Coming up on Saturday 18 October will be the launch of PETER FOYLE SOLO EXHIBITION in gallery one.

Peter is well known in Ayrshire, working from his studio and framing gallery in Troon, a well established Scottish artist, whose paintings capture warmth, atmosphere and light.

We look forward to welcoming Peter to the gallery along with his latest work.

Saturday 25 October sees the launch of another annual event here at the gallery… the latest collection of award winning photography from the talented members of Ayrshire Photographic Society.

The latter exhibitions will take us through to our 2026 programme and we look forward to welcoming you in to see them. A special mention to our partners in Rozelle House who have just completed an amazingly spooky transformation of their downstairs galleries into a chilling graveyard and creepy house for the month of October. Free family fun and activities await in this immersive Hallowe'en exhibition. No booking required

The Collaboration Process - John Byrne

We are delighted with the feedback from visitors to our current exhibitions and in particular the ‘Celebrating John Byrne’. All down to our special collaboration with The Glasgow Print Studio, The Royal Scottish Academy, The Fine Art Society, Edinburgh and of course, John’s daughter Celie Byrne. All resulting in this unique collection of Byrne’s work, some of which is being displayed in public for the first time.

Whilst the exhibition has been running, we have been able to host 2 sessions of print demonstrations relating to Byrne’s work, thanks to Master Printer Ian McNicol, revealing the collaborative process between artist and printer. The audiences were given a fascinating insight into life in the Glasgow Print Studio when Byrne was around. Ian himself, creating many of Byrne’s prints, some of which form part of the exhibition. With etching plates from the Byrne archive, Ian talked us through the preparation and went on to print off a few of the familiar images on an etching press. These hour long sessions were well attended and enjoyed by all.

Improvements to the Courtyard

Things are happening in the courtyard thanks to some amazing volunteers who have given up their time to help Friends of the Maclaurin maintain the planting area in the courtyard.

Over the last few years the Friends have renewed the seating outside the gallery, providing benches and picnic tables for visitors to sit out in the sunny weather. This year we lost our plant supplier and so a group of green fingered volunteers kindly stepped up and planted a new herbaceous border in our big trough on Thursday! They’re a hardy bunch too, with all the work done in the rain!

It's an amazing job and huge thanks to the newly formed Courtyard team, Pattie Kewney, Geoff Caldwell and Kayte Mapes. When we spoke with Pattie on Thursday she summed up the day’s efforts, explaining, “We’re soaked to the skin but pleased with the result! There is always a good feeling about volunteering and contributing what we can for the enjoyment of the community.”

Yes indeed, everyone benefits from this and we all appreciate the team’s sterling effort.

Cultural Icon - John Byrne

More excitement at the weekend, along with some good weather, when we launched the CELEBRATING JOHN BYRNE exhibition on Saturday. We were delighted to welcome John Byrne’s daughter Celie, to open the show.

Celie, who is also an artist, explained that some of her father’s fabulous artwork we have on display, has never been shown in public. This unique collection of work has been made possible, in the main, by The Glasgow Art Studio, The Fine Art Society Edinburgh and the Royal Scottish Academy. It is a cracker of a show and we are delighted we can also include a piece from the Maclaurin’s own permanent collection.

Look out for Celie’s own figurative artwork, which forms part of this show too! The exhibition runs until 31 August and can be seen in galleries 2, 3 and 4.

Flower Kings and Nobles - Lex McFadyen’s Solo Exhibition

This vibrant selection of predominately new work by Scottish artist Lex McFadyen, adorns gallery one. Most of his work was completed in his sunny French studio at Noyers-sur-Serein, Burgundy. Each one a shining jewel on the canvas and, so far, has proved a popular show with visitors.

Images here are from launch day on 24 May and show Lex alongside the gallery’s curator Dianne Gardner. McFadyen grew up in Ayrshire before completing his degree at Glasgow School of Art and he went on to have a successful career in fashion. Now he has come full circle, returning to his first love of painting and we are delighted that he has returned to Ayrshire for a solo show!

This exhibition runs until 30 June. There’s still time to see it… or call in again for another look! All artwork is for sale and affordably priced, original artwork. The perfect statement piece to transform any wall in your home.

Spring Vibes

Spring has been busy in the gallery with the launching of Glasgow Society of Women Artists' annual exhibition. Well known art critic Clare Henry, who was judging for the event, also presented the numerous awards at the launch. This exhibition fills galleries 3 and 4, with a wide range of hanging artwork, as well as jewellery and 3D works.

At the same time, Alistair Devine, freelance photographer for the press, gives us some of his finest work in gallery 2, throughout his longstanding career in the industry. He treated us to an evening event, giving guests a highly entertaining insight into his career. This man’s award-winning photography clearly demonstrates his passion for creativity.

Both exhibitions run until Sunday 8 June. There’s still time to see them before they go!

Coming soon, we have a solo exhibition from Scottish artist Lex McFadyen. Lex now creates work from his home and studio in France, but has roots here in Ayrshire and we are delighted to see him return to where he grew up, bringing with him a vibrant collection of new work. The artwork from this exhibition can also be viewed on our website. Flower Kings and Nobles, from 25 May.

Lined up for early summer is an exhibition displaying some significant artworks of the late John Byrne, Scottish playwright, screenwriter, artist and designer.

Symbolic works with some historic influence from Scottish artist Frank McNab will also adorn our walls in July.

Meet the Artist - Ayr Sketch Club

The first exhibition of the year is Ayr Sketch Club's Annual Exhibition. It's always a popular event with a wide range of Ayrshire based artists. We hosted a ‘Meet the Artists’ event midway through their exhibition as, sadly, their scheduled exhibition launch was cancelled due to storm Eowyn.

What a great afternoon it was, bustling with artists and visitors! This exhibition continues until the end of March.

Art Workshops in the Patrons Gallery 2025

Heading into Spring, we are hosting a variety of art workshops in the Patrons Gallery, over the next few weeks.

We have already kicked this off with a fabulous Pastel Workshop by Gregory Moore, Artist and Printmaker in February. We didn’t even get a chance to advertise this on our social media pages, before the 2 days were booked up!

Similarly, Angela Ortenzi-MacColl has already proved a big success, with another of her collage workshops coming up on 22nd February (no spaces left!).

Next on the agenda is Sue Howat from Sixpenny Studio, who will be teaching her interesting watercolour and Indian ink resist technique. There are 2 date options for this workshop, Tuesday 4 March and Saturday 8 March 2025.

Ayr Sketch Club Annual Exhibition 2025

This is our first exhibition of 2025 and it's already off to a flying start, despite having to cancel their preview event due to storm Eowyn.

We are however holding a MEET THE ARTIST event on SUNDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2025 at 2pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to see some of your favourite artists from Ayr Sketch Club as well as meeting new ones.

They will be around to answer your questions and chat, while you see the show.

This is a free event, open to all and refreshments are provided.

A PLAYLIST FOR FIONNBARR - FRANK MCFADDEN

Two stunning new exhibitions will open at the Maclaurin on Saturday 30th March. Peter Howson’s TEMPUS FUGIT is displayed to advantage in the two largest galleries, giving space for the work to breathe. Howson, who is the Patron of the gallery, has produced some exceptional work, much of it brand new. The title in its true translation of the Latin reminds us that time passing can never be regained.

There is a real clarity about the artist’s intention in this work. It is not always comfortable viewing - crowds, fighting, fire, despair, all with a strong political awareness but at the same time communicating the personal fear and angst Howson needs to share with us. Given the times in which we live we can all relate to this theme. Howson reminds us of this message, to which we need to pay heed.

It is very fitting that Howson and McFadden should be exhibiting at the same time. They met many years ago when McFadden approached Howson about his work. Howson saw the potential and they have worked closely ever since.

McFadden’s A PLAYLIST FOR FIONNBARR is quirky and visually fascinating, often very beautiful in an unexpected way. On one level the work is very much a personal exploration, advice from a grandfather to a grandchild - namely that the arts are important, as is the ability to think for yourself.

However, a closer inspection reveals so much more. McFadden is telling us that we cannot live without the arts, they are not some sort of add-on or a pleasant diversion, they are essential. They provide a harbour from the hazards and horrors of the world. That said, he also reminds us of our own mortality, calling attention to a finite amount of time we possess to make up our own minds.

Society of Scottish Artists 125th Annual Exhibition

Sunday saw the opening of the SSA's Annual Exhibition and we are delighted to host this special event here at the Maclaurin, the first time the exhibition has been shown in the West of Scotland. The gallery was super busy as we heard opening speeches from the Chair of the Maclaurin Trust, John Walker and SSA President Vasile Toch. There was also a moment of reflection and tribute to a very special lady, our vice chair, Celia Judge, who recently passed.

This show runs until 14 January and all artwork is for sale, with 5 galleries brimming full of wonderful wall art, sculpture, installations and more. If ever there was a must see exhibition, this is it!

Opening of the 29th Annual Ayrshire Save the Children Exhibition

We had a lovely opening at the weekend to our Save the Children exhibition.

This is always a favourite and such a worthy cause with 40% of sales going to the charity. There are 200 artworks on display in 3 of our galleries, along with raffle tickets to a fantastic prize very kindly donated by the late HelenTurner's family. This show will run until Sunday 29 October.

Opening of the Alasdair Taylor Retrospective Exhibition

A huge turnout for the opening of the Alasdair Taylor Retrospective Exhibition on Saturday 22 July.

Alasdair Taylor was considered one of the foremost abstract expressionist painters in Scotland in the late 20th century.

Alasdair’s two daughters, Jean and Anna, made sure anyone who had known their father was invited and people came from Denmark, France, Ireland, London and all over Scotland.

Opened by Booker winning author James Kelman, a lifetime friend of Taylor’s the exhibition is a colourful reminder of a man whose passion in life was to paint.

The exhibition continues until Sunday 3rd September.

Open Studios Ayrshire winners at Paisley Art Institute Annual Open Exhibition

A fantastic opening afternoon at the Maclaurin Art Gallery in May for the Paisley Art Institute 134th annual open exhibition! There was a great turn out, some lovely speeches and best of all - lots of fantastic art.

Several artist members from Open Studios Ayrshire were honoured. Amongst the prize winners were Dianne Gardner, Ian Leyden, Bobby Johnstone and Lorna Hutcheson.

Our other members exhibiting at the show were Kerry Souter, Louise McBride, Ian McKinnell, Sandra Ratcliffe and Lisa Brown. So Open Studios Ayrshire were well represented.

Paisley Art Institute Annual Open Exhibition 2023 Opening

A large and enthusiastic turnout for the opening of the Paisley Art Institute 134 Annual Exhibition, held for the first time at the Maclaurin Galleries.

With over 400 entries, including painting and sculpture submitted by members and open competitors, the competition for prizes was intense. Welcomed by PAI President Joe Hargan the prizes were presented by well known Ayrshire golfer and art lover Peter McAvoy.

134th Annual Open Exhibition - 20th May to 25th June 2023

Over four hundred works featuring many well known Scottish artists will be on show at the Maclaurin Gallery in Ayr when the Paisley Art Institute’s 134th Annual exhibition opens on Saturday May 20th. This is the first time the PAI, as it is known, will exhibit outside its home town, the change of venue bought about by a plan from their local council to use the art gallery for other purposes. The Maclaurin Gallery is delighted to welcome such a well respected and well loved institution.

John Walker, Chair of the Maclaurin Trust, said of the exhibition.

“Our late colleague and First Patron, Helen M Turner was a keen supporter of PAI and determined to bring the annual show to Ayr when the institute lost its Paisley home.

She introduced us to the team who have produced what is going to be an altogether vibrant exhibition.”

“As Paisley’s Art Galleries have been ‘reimagined', we have come to Ayr to the Maclaurin Gallery for this, our 134th annual exhibition. We have enjoyed working with the Maclaurin team and thank them for their efficiency. A healthy submission of work in wide-ranging in styles will make a fine display.

We have some 20 prizes to reward excellence, with some award sponsors choosing their own prize and others being chosen by our invited judges, including hotel owner, artist and collector Bill Costley, Mike Leonard, convenor at Glasgow Art Club, and John Walker, Chair of the Maclaurin Trust.”

The opening on Saturday 20th May will be addressed by Peter McAvoy OBE, a leading amateur golfer and writer.

We are sad to announce the death of Trustee Helen M Turner

The Trustees of the Maclaurin Gallery are sad to announce the death of our fellow Trustee and dear friend Helen M Turner.

Helen is well known nationally and much loved in Ayrshire.

She was the first Patron of the Maclaurin and worked tirelessly for it as a Trustee and member of the Friends committee.

She will be greatly missed.

From Saturday 3rd July the Maclaurin Gallery is delighted to host a major Retrospective Exhibition by one of Scotland foremost painters John Lowrie Morrison, known to all as Jolomo.

The exhibition spans his entire career from schooldays when it was always his ambition to be a painter, through his time at the GSA, to the present day. Jolomo paintings are held in many important collections across the globe and his colourful, evocative cards, calendars and prints which so beautifully document his beloved Scottish homeland are to be found in many homes. There will be a number of recent works for sale as well as cards, calendars and prints.

The exhibition is open every day but due to current Covid restrictions it is advised to book your slot to view the collection by ringing the gallery on 01292 445447.

At the end of October the Maclaurin hosts an exhibition of work by painters and craftspeople from Ayrshire, done during the past few months of this pandemic.

As a consideration to our artists during these difficult times the Maclaurin Trust and South Ayrshire Council have cut the rate of commission from 40% to 30%.

Phyllis McColm the long serving and much valued Minutes Secretary of the Maclaurin Trust has decided that it is time to put down her notebook and pen.

Expressing their gratitude to her for her years of cheerful service, Emeritus Patron Helen Tuner and Trust Vice Chair Celia Stevenson presented Phyllis with two framed pastels by Helen at a small coffee ceremony in Alloway. Phyllis will be greatly missed and she will definitely be a hard act to follow.

Also going online are some of our favourite festivals that had to completely rethink their offer this year because of Coronavirus.

The Wigtown Book Festival, a great favourite is going online, as is the Boswell Book Festival of Memoir and Biography and Spring Fling which gets supporters travelling across the country to attend is also going digital. The great thing is that you can buy from all of them and even get your books signed.

The devilishly hard quiz compiled for a Friend's competition by the Maclaurin Treasurer, Douglas Gulland, has been won by Moira and Sandy Whalen of Alloway. The first prize of an original pastel by Helen M. Turner of the River Doon was presented to them by the quiz master himself.

The bi-annual Senior Schools Art awards are currently open at the Maclaurin Art Gallery and the exhibition continues until mid January.

Two prizes were being competed for: the principal one, The Maclaurin Award, given to the pupil who, in the opinion of the judges, has produced work of outstanding creativity and artistry.

The winner of the Maclaurin Award this year is Mhairi Smeeton from Kyle Academy. No stranger to open competition Mhairi won the Kilgour Award two years ago.

The other major award, The Kilgour Award, named in memory of Jack Kilgour who was a major influence at the gallery in its early days and one of the instigators of the Friends of the Maclaurin organisation.

This year the award went to Katie Bryan from Carrick Academy. Katie also received a Highly Commended in the Maclaurin Award competition.

The role of Jean Armour in the life of Robert Burns seems to have been routinely ignored, not so much by Burns himself as by subsequent commentators. Yet Jean was a young woman who displayed great strength of character.

Author Catherine Czerkawska talks about the extensive research that went into her novel, The Jewel, and how much her perspective on this extraordinary woman changed as she wrote about Jean's life with and without her famous husband.

Armistice Day Centenary Exhibition

11th November 2018 marks one hundred years since the end of The First World War. To honour this occasion South Ayrshire Museums will install a pop-up museum in Rozelle House recalling local involvement and remembrance of The Great War.

This small exhibition will open on 26th October 2018 outside the tearoom in Rozelle House and run until 24th December.

The exhibition will feature a Wall of Remembrance, if any members of the public have objects, documents or photographs recalling the impact of the war on local people we would like to hear from you. Our hope is to photograph any items and display them on the wall with a message.

Rozelle Tree

Visitors to Rozelle Park are fascinated by this intricately carved tree trunk. Its a trunk with a story. It is the remaining part of a magnificent cedar of Lebanon that graced the front of Rozelle House and the Maclaurin Gallery for as long as anyone can remember, as the tree is possibly two hundred years old.

Sadly a winter storm blew such a large branch of the tree down that tree experts decided that, as the old tree had been propped and held together for so many years, it was no longer safe. Rather than taking it down to the ground it was decided to save as much of the stump as possible and the carvings of the interesting figures and faces - done by the sculptors who fashioned the WW1 soldiers - are the result. These have an enduring fascination for visitors of all ages.

Winter Season 2025

Our winter season is off to a racing start with the launch of the 31st Annual Save the Children exhibition over the weekend.

The show runs until 2 November and this year the Save the Children Committee have organised an exciting additional treat!

For the first time since the pandemic hit us in 2020 we were able to host a proper Private View for our featured artist James Fullarton. It was a lovely afternoon allowing visitors to meet the artist and enjoy a glass of wine with their friends.
