We are delighted to share that a 360° virtual tour of the SSA 125th Annual Exhibition is now available to view.
This exhibition, across all four main galleries of the Maclaurin, has attracted entries from all over the United Kingdom and features over 400 works by members and open entrants, including many well known Scottish artists. This is the first time the Institute will exhibit outside its home town and The Maclaurin Gallery is delighted to welcome them.
The Scottish Society of Botanical Artists is a young and inclusive society, dedicated to encouraging all forms of botanical art in Scotland and further afield, and we welcome all who love and appreciate this wonderful art form.
Botanical art as a whole can sometimes seem a little restrictive in its dedication to detail and accuracy, but is in fact a wide church. From descriptive, scientific plates, painted exactingly to scale and used for identification of individual species, to floral portraits, plants painted in their native landscape and imaginative compositions. Occasionally pollinators are included, so you may see birds and insects happily grabbing their dinner or flitting about.
We change the venue yearly for our annual exhibition, moving around the country, so that more people have the opportunity to enjoy the paintings in person. We are thrilled to be exhibiting in Ayrshire for the first time, and especially to be in such an esteemed and historic venue as the Maclaurin Galleries.
This exhibition promises to be an extravaganza - our largest yet. It will highlight brand new works in many different media, including watercolour, ink, coloured pencil, charcoal and graphite.
Members will also be sharing some techniques and we have several volunteers for painting days, where you can come along and watch new work progressing.
We hope you enjoy your visit, and that you are inspired to look more closely at the world of plants as you walk through nature, tend your garden, or water your favourite houseplant.

More than two years ago we began to plan for a retrospective exhibition celebrating the work of James Fullarton. Circumstances made it impossible to present this work at the appointed time but it will have been worth the wait.
Fullarton, who lives locally, is an artist with an international following. Many of you will know his work and those who do not are in for a treat. Landscape, Portraiture and Still Life, something for everyone to enjoy. one of the highlights of the year.
Franzeska Ewart was born in Stranraer and, after graduating in Zoology from Glasgow University, went on to teach English as an Additional Language, often using puppetry to encourage language development.
She spends most of her time painting in oils, creating dreamlike worlds where women and birds have strong emotional connections. In some paintings the birds bring the women small, simple gifts from which they derive comfort, support, or protection. In others, the bird’s egg itself is the gift, the symbol suggesting a new beginning, an increase in self- confidence, or the fulfilment of a dream.
The exhibition title is The Dream of Flying and, like the egg, flying symbolises different things to different viewers: an escape from negativity, insecurity or unhappiness for some; wish fulfilment for others; or simply the wonderful feeling of release and joy we experience when we dare to cast off our inhibitions and follow our hearts.
The most recent paintings were done during the troubled times of Covid, and they express a hope for a future in which people have greater awareness, closeness, and appreciation of nature.

The exhibition spanned his entire career from schooldays when it was always his ambition to be a painter, through his time at the GSA, to the present day. Jolomo paintings are held in many important collections across the globe and his colourful, evocative cards, calendars and prints which so beautifully document his beloved Scottish homeland are to be found in many homes.

Ayr Photographic Society was founded at the start of the 20th Century and has been nurturing the art and science of photography over the intervening decades.
The images presented within this exhibition are captured digitally allowing the photographer to easily store the results or to print in the manner of a traditional film-captured picture.
During the Covid pandemic the Society has continued to meet weekly via Zoom with the unanticipated bonus of enjoying presentations from photographers throughout the UK and beyond.
These photographs are the result of the club's Annual Digital Projected Images Competition which was judged by Neil Macgregor LRPS, DPAGB on 11th March 2021.
